Let’s Dive Into Sustainability – A Living Article…

This article is different!

Why? Because it will keep growing bigger and better!

Let’s call it an Evergreen article. It will evolve over time as I gain more insights and deepen my understanding on my journey of sustainability. Truth be told, I’m not exactly sure what this will look like, but I’m excited to give it a try.

So, where do we start? Hmmm…

Let’s start with something as basic yet complex as, “What is sustainability?” I’ll be honest; I grappled with that question though I knew what it looked like and what it didn’t. And then I realised that everyone has a different definition depending on their context, which is okay! However, having a personal definition matters because it clarifies your values and goals, guiding your actions and decisions consistently. My understanding of sustainability evolved as I read some of the inspirational writings of Alan Atkisson, David Orr, and Donella Meadows. Inspired by their words and ideas, I formulated a definition that motivates me to be more sustainable.

At this point, my definition of sustainability looks like this:

It’s a movement to create systems where human activities support nature, ensuring a livable and thriving planet for all.

This definition helps me reflect more on my role as an educator. Considering sustainability as a movement gives it a sense of purpose and appreciates all the efforts being made at the moment, no matter how small, in the right direction, but at the same time, demanding more from us. This perspective emphasizes the importance of helping students by providing them the tools to make informed choices about how we live and choose to live in this complex, dynamic and interconnected world; where our actions matter and can contribute to the collective vision towards a more sustainable world.

Let’s continue to play our part and educate for a sustainable future!

More to come …
